Electricity price brake falls: challenges for Arnoldstein and the southern rast

The abolition of the electricity price brake at the turn of the year brings significant changes for everyone who lives and work in the region. This measure, which was introduced in 2022, aimed to cover the increased electricity prices. Up to an annual consumption of 2,900 kilowatt hours, the price was limited to 10 cents per kilowatt hour, which was a noticeable relief for many households and small companies.

On January 1, 2024, the current information will now be completely eliminated. The support was halved last July, and the complete deletion means that many consumers should check their current tariffs as a precaution. Appropriate price increases are to be expected from the energy suppliers, since the previous support costs are no longer borne by the state.

economic challenges for companies

Particularly affected are not only private households, but also large companies, such as the Südrast Dreiländerecke GmbH in Arnoldstein. The managing director, Birgit Gschwenter, emphasizes that the electrical energy that is necessary for its operation is immensely high. Your facility needs around 650,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually to operate the 24-hour restaurant and the connected hotel complex. "We are dealing with enormous running costs," she explains. In your furnishings, numerous technical devices work that cause continuous power consumption, including cooling devices, ventilation systems and lighting.

"The prices are far from those before pandemic," adds Gschwenter. As part of the discussion about the electricity price brake, it becomes clear that many companies face enormous challenges in the border triangle. The development of the network costs is also uncertain and leaves a lot of worries in the environment of industry and gastronomy.

The call for political measures

In view of the increasing prices, Gschwenter appeals to energy policy to take measures to accommodate consumers. "The energy service providers report billions of dollars while we as an end consumer have to suffer from the high costs," she says. A decline in energy prices also had a positive impact on the number of guests in your hotel and restaurant. "It is not possible for us to simply pass on the increasing costs to our guests, because in such a case you could stay away," she adds.

The inner connection between the costs and global events such as pandemic or the Ukraine decline causes additional confusion. "I hope for more dialogue and cooperation.
