Koralmbahn: Carinthia is planning sustainable development for the regions

The opening of the Koralmbahn represents a significant step for the development of the regions in Carinthia. The state has already taken measures to ensure that the associated opportunities are optimally used. The steering team for this project includes the departments for spatial planning and regional development, which work together to create regional development models. These guiding principles should not only focus on spatial planning, but also focus on economic and transport policy development as well as settlement development.

This process begins in the regions of Lower Carinthia, Carinica-Klagenfurt-Umland and Villach-Umland, where the need for development is particularly pressing. The aim is sustainable collaboration, which is supported through workshops and participation processes with community representatives and relevant organizations. At the end of this process, which lasts until the end of 2025, specific content for the respective development models will be presented.

Important details about regional development

The work focuses on several key regions: Lower Carinthia, which includes the districts of Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg, as well as the Carinica-Klagenfurt surrounding area, including the city of Klagenfurt and the district of Klagenfurt-Land, and finally the Villach-Umland region, which includes both the city of Villach and the surrounding country. The first phase of this project includes a thorough analysis of the current conditions and challenges in these areas.

In the second step, participatory processes are planned in which community representatives and specialist organizations take part in on-site workshops. Through this collaborative approach, those responsible want to ensure that the needs and views of the local population are incorporated into the planning. This strategy is intended to help create synergies that optimize both economic and transport policy development.

The ongoing development is a reaction to the increasing pressure to act resulting from the impending opening of the Koralmbahn. This goes hand in hand with the need to include landscape protection, energy supply and other important issues in the planning. A holistic approach is crucial in order to adequately meet the challenges of change.

The regional development models are not just adjustments, but are intended to be proactive measures to promote increasing quality of life, ecological sustainability and economic progress in the region. The measures are not only forward-looking, but also broadly based in order to create a comprehensive development concept for the region. The hope is that these new approaches will lead to improved cooperation between communities and broader regions in order to position Carinthia as an attractive location.
