Tragic incident after Krampus run in Althofen: lost a life
A shocking incident kept the city of Althofen in suspense after the big Krampus run. On Saturday evening, around 1000 participants and thousands of spectators surround the market to experience the traditional removals and the associated celebrations. But after the spectacle, a tragic death was reported that suddenly converted the joy in the city into mourning.
As announced by the Carinthian State Police Directorate (LPD) on Sunday, a 24-year-old man was found dead in a car in the parking lot of a supermarket in the early morning. This was done by his own sister, who had searched for him because he hadn't come home. When she was terrifying discovery, she immediately alerted the rescue workers, but all help came too late.
The circumstances of the incident
The deceased came from the St. Veit/Glan district and had previously visited the Krampus run and the associated Krampus disco. Instead of driving home late at night, he decided to sleep in the car. He had parked the vehicle in the supermarket car park, switched on the auxiliary heater and covered himself with a ceiling. Unfortunately, it turned out that the parking heater may have been defective, which led to the release of toxic gases in the interior of the vehicle.
The police unit for crime investigations has taken up the investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident. "Although we put together a lot of information, many questions are still in the room and we cannot currently say anything definitely," said LPD spokesman Werner Pucher. A first view indicates carbon monoxide poisoning, but external negligence cannot be completely excluded.
For the bereaved, especially the family of the late man, support has already been organized by crisis intervention teams. The news has left deep traces in the community, and memorial candles were set up in the parking lot to pay respect for the young man and to remember his far too early death.
