Young driver under the influence of drugs: accident damage in Spittal

In Spittal an der Drau, on the night of November 28, 2024, a traffic accident occurred in which a 21-year-old man, living in the Spittal/Drau district, was driving his car. The accident happened around 12:05 a.m. on the B 100 while the driver was apparently under the influence of drugs. Next to him was a 17-year-old friend who was also involved in the incident.

The driver lost control of his vehicle and came to the left side of the road, where he first hit a fire hydrant and then hit a solid concrete wall. Both occupants suffered minor injuries in this collision. The driver's recklessness led to police examining him and finding symptoms of drug impairment. The officers also found a small amount of cannabis herb, a grinder - a device for chopping herbs - and a water pipe in his car, which indicated drug use.

Investigations and consequences

A subsequent medical examination confirmed that the 21-year-old was unfit to drive, which was due to the influence of addictive substances and fatigue. As a result, his driver's license was revoked, meaning he is temporarily no longer allowed to drive legally. The accident also caused significant damage to the vehicle and the fire hydrant. The Spittal/Drau volunteer fire department was on site with 12 emergency services to support the members of the fire department in recording the accident and securing the area.

The police are also continuing further investigations into the seized drugs. It remains to be seen what legal consequences the driver will face as a result of his decisions. Such incidents shed light on serious issues such as safe use of vehicles and the influence of drugs on driving ability, which pose serious risks not only to drivers but also to other road users.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries in this incident, but it does illustrate the importance of responsible driving. The protection of all road users should always be a priority, and driving without alcohol or drugs is essential for road safety.
