Fire brigade saves family after fire in Spittal single-family home

A worrying incident occurred on November 29, 2024 in the Spittal an der Drau district. At around 1:00 p.m., an 8-year-old boy found a steam sterilizer in a former living room that was being used as a storage room. While the boy was trying to plug the device into a power outlet, it fell out of his hand and shattered on the wooden floor. The damaged device quickly caught fire, and the flames spread rapidly to nearby plastic items and boxes, including a footboard of a double bed.

The situation could have been more dangerous as the boy's 39-year-old mother was in the house at the time. She became aware of the sound of the fire and reacted immediately. Luckily, the son was able to escape outside in time while the mother tried to put out the fire with water. However, her efforts were unsuccessful, so she also left the house to seek safety.

Efficient use of the fire brigade

The alerted fire department quickly responded to the operation. Thanks to their quick response, the emergency services were able to quickly extinguish the flames in the affected room. The firefighters used a compressed fan to combat the smoke. A total of 55 firefighters from the Spittal/Drau, Baldramsdorf and Lendorf volunteer fire departments were on duty. This cooperation certainly helped to prevent something worse from happening despite the difficult situation.

A fortunate circumstance was that both the mother and her son were uninjured in the incident. Both were examined by the rescue team on site, but fortunately there were no injuries. This shows how important it is to act quickly and decisively in such emergencies.
