Santa Claus goes to the children's Advent at the lake with a boat and packages!
Saint Nicholas is a central symbol during Advent in many regions, especially in Carinthia, where an annual festival is held in his honor. On December 5, 2025, at 4:30 p.m., Santa Claus will take the boat to the CMA Stift Ossiach pier and herald his arrival with a festive ceremony. This heralds a colorful program for families that includes musical performances and traditional dances from local groups. Performances by the Ossiach elementary school and kindergarten as well as an ensemble from the Carinthian Police Music have already been announced.
The festival is complemented by the Advent market as part of the “Stiftsweihnacht am See”, where various exhibitors offer ceramics, crackling glass, woodwork, bags, herbs and regional products. Shoppers are invited to enjoy the anticipation of Christmas as they stroll through the stalls.
The legend of Santa Claus
Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop, is a legendary figure known for his miraculous deeds. He was born on March 15, 270 in Patara (modern-day Turkey) and died on December 6, 343. Over the centuries, his cult developed, particularly his tradition of mysterious gift-giving, which ultimately led to the figure of Santa Claus. His legacy also includes many legends, including rescuing three girls from prostitution and calming a storm at sea.
Veneration of Saint Nicholas is widespread in various cultures, with December 6th celebrated as his solemn memorial day. In art he is often depicted as an elderly bishop, shown with children or in maritime scenes. His relics are venerated in many cities, including Bari, where they were brought there in the 11th century during the Seljuk invasion.
Carinthia's Christmas traditions
Carinthia is full of festive traditions throughout the Christmas season. The lovingly decorated Christmas markets, music performances and community celebrations are an essential part of Austrian culture. Another cultural highlight during the Christmas season is the famous song "Silent Night! Holy Night!", which was performed for the first time in Oberndorf near Salzburg on December 24, 1818. Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber created the song, which is now known all over the world and is often associated with Advent.
The Christmas season in Austria, especially in Carinthia, invites you to experience the traditions and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Whether visiting Santa Claus or strolling through the Advent markets, the anticipation of the upcoming festival can be felt everywhere.
