Governor Kaiser (SPÖ) in his speech emphasized the urgency of the commitment to human rights, especially in times of global challenges such as the war in Ukraine and climate change. Kaiser emphasized that the newly endowed Carinthian Human Rights Prize, which is awarded at 20,000 euros in two categories, not only appreciates the services of the excellent, but also encouraged others to work for human rights. "Through the country's human rights award, we want to get committed people and organizations before the curtain," said Kaiser.

a long tradition of human rights

The roots of the modern human rights movement go far back, as the “Human Rights Leagues in Europe (1898–2016)” published by Wolfgang Schmale and Christopher Treilmayr illustrates. It addresses the establishment of human rights organizations in Europe, with the focus on the French League des Droit's de l’Homme, which was launched in 1898. This organization reacted to the Dreyfus affair and was a pioneer in the defense of bourgeois rights, what was the foundation of further national leagues, including the German League for Human Rights in 1922.

The union of these groups was crucial for international human rights protection. Among other things, the publication shows how often the members were prominent personalities such as Albert Einstein and Rosa Luxemburg who fought for human rights and against discrimination. The challenges of cooperation and the political controversy between different camps within the leagues reflect the complexity of human rights protection.
