Fraud via social network: Carinthian man cheated out of thousands of euros

A 60-year-old man from the Klagenfurt district fell into a fraudulent trap in September 2024. Through a social network he came across a website that promised tempting profits. An alleged stockbroker contacted him and persuaded him to transfer money to a Lithuanian account. To be on the safe side, small amounts were refunded to him to build trust.

When the man wanted to withdraw his alleged high winnings in October, the fraudster demanded further transfers, which made the 60-year-old suspicious. Luckily, he recognized the fraud in time and filed a report. Nevertheless, there was considerable damage amounting to several thousand euros.

Unfortunately, such scams are not uncommon and it is important to be vigilant when it comes to financial transactions online. Always remain skeptical and, if in doubt, seek professional advice to protect yourself from fraudsters.
