Hamilton's farewell: Mercedes starts the race with new talent!
A huge upheaval at Mercedes is causing excitement in Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton, who was the face of the team for years and became world champion six times, is moving to Ferrari. Team boss Toto Wolff describes the situation in remarkable words, comparing Hamilton's separation to a change of partner that leaves an emotional rift. “Seeing him in different team clothes is like seeing your wife suddenly walking around with another man at your side,” Wolff told the German “SportBild”. Despite this change, Hamilton remains a friend to the Mercedes family. “We don’t mourn him,” emphasizes Wolff, “but the dynamic has changed.”
The gap left by Hamilton will be filled by the young Andrea Kimi Antonelli, for whom Wolff has high hopes. "An absolute top talent," enthuses the team boss, but doesn't get cocky: "We know that we are not the favorites for the world title. The competition is strong." This will become apparent next Sunday at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne when the first points of the new season will be awarded. This will show how Antonelli performs and how Mercedes can survive in the increasingly tough competition.
Strong teamwork is key
But the focus is not only on departures and new arrivals. Wolff also sees a remarkable collaboration between the new duo of Antonelli and the experienced George Russell. “What I see is a really respectful and constructive collaboration,” said Wolff, commenting on the team dynamics. This close cooperation is reflected in the exchange between the drivers, who actively support each other. Wolff is proud of this form of team spirit: "There is an active exchange, the cards are not kept close to the chest. That's good for us." While Russell and the newcomer are currently evenly matched in the race, the coming season will be crucial to whether Mercedes can keep up with the leaders, as Eurosport also reports.
