Bell ring in Austria: a sign against hunger on July 25th!

Österreich - on July 25, 2025 at 3 p.m. the church bells will ring all over Austria. This extraordinary bell ringing is part of the "Bell ringing against hunger" campaign, which was initiated by Caritas Austria in order to draw attention to the pressing problem of global hunger. As reported 5min.at, the daily bell ringing in Austria is deeply anchored in the religious tradition, but the additional ringing is of particular importance on this day.

The President of Caritas Austria, Nora Tödtling-Musenbichler, emphasizes that the hunger problem has gained urgency and tragedy. 733 million people worldwide are currently affected by hunger, a number that puts the acute crisis in the shade before and during corona pandemic. According to [ots.at] (https://www.ots.at/presseaus-sung/ots_20250717_ots0005/caritas-Kirchen-Laeuten-oester- Oester-Hunger-and-Fuer-community responsibility), about 29 percent of the world population have no constant access to food, which has serious consequences for the health and development of people.

global effects of the hunger crisis

The climate crisis decisively contributes to tightening the nutritional situation, since between 3.3 and 3.6 billion people have to live in endangered environments. In Africa, nutritional uncertainty is alarming, with 58 percent of the population that is affected - almost twice as much as the global average. In Burundi, every second child also suffers from malnutrition, which has devastating consequences for their growth. Caritas Austria therefore plans the campaign to draw attention to these tragic conditions and at the same time demands more climate justice for the global south, where the consequences of climate change are particularly important.

In addition to the global numbers, the comprehensive report of the UN is alarming about the world hunger. According to caritas.ch, 730 million people are currently suffering from hunger, and almost a third of the world's population is affected by nutritional uncertainty. The main drivers of this crisis are the climate crisis, armed conflicts, wars and the increasing global inequality. Especially in countries such as Congo, Sudan and Ethiopia, the emergency is critical.
