Freedom for Khleslplatz: Citizens defend themselves against construction plans!
According to a current report by the FPÖ-Meidling OTS massive allegations against the SPÖ and their plans to repurpose the historic Khleslplatz. Party leader and EU MP Petra Steger as well as the state party secretary and Meidlinger constituency top candidate Lukas Brucker warn of a potential destruction of the townscape and the historical character of the square. “The SPÖ is apparently pursuing the interests of related property developers who want to build high-rise residential buildings there,” said the two FPÖ politicians concerned and announced that they would vigorously defend themselves against the project.
The size of the planned buildings in particular is causing unrest among the residents, who have formed a citizens' initiative. In response to the plans, they are calling for an immediate stop to the rezoning because they fear the preservation of the historical ensemble. In addition, Khleslplatz was declared a monument in 1973, which was intended to provide additional protection MyDistrict reported. The entire area was designated as a protection zone in the past in order to preserve Vienna's characteristic cityscape.
Political reactions and future developments
District councilor Franz Schodl expressed concern about possible changes to the zoning that could allow the permitted building height to be increased to up to 17 meters. “The preservation of the unique historical ensemble is crucial,” says Schodl. In a conversation with the district leader Wilfried Zankl from the SPÖ, he emphasized that there is currently no final plan that formalizes the zoning. However, the term “protection zone” allows for certain adjustments as long as the cityscape is not severely affected.
