First solo exhibition by Kazuna Taguchi: Surreal body worlds in Vienna!

On June 12, 2025, the first museum of the artist Kazuna Taguchi, which has been living in the city since 2013, opened in the Mumok in Vienna. This important show is characterized by body fragments, gestures and looks, which are anchored in the tradition of surrealistic representations of female body. Taguchi's works are not only a fusion of painting and photography, but also reflect on historical discourses by both media. Her pictures, which consist of different sources such as anonymous pictures, historical works of art and own paintings, penetrate different time levels and narrative rooms.

The figures in Taguchi's work are in a state of floating between appearing and disappearing, which makes them particularly fascinating. The most extensive cycle of this exhibition, "The Eyes of Eurydice", addresses the mythological figure Eurydike and shows the artistic examination of myths and the unconscious. In addition, the new photographic series "In Anticipation, 2025", which refers to the Spatial Concepts of the artist Lucio Fontana.

do we need new access to surrealism?

Kazuna Taguchi uses her artistic practice to question the often one -sided representations of women in art. In a context in which women and their bodies represent central motifs in surrealism, she asks for the desire and sexuality on which these representations are based. The exhibition also addresses the challenges and opportunities that arise from the perspective of artists.

The opening of the exhibition had to be canceled at short notice due to a violence in Graz. On this evening, however, the exhibition is open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with free admission. The show will be accessible to the audience from June 13 to November 16, 2025. Taguchi's way of working, which combines analog techniques with painting, creates a unique visual language and captivates the visitors.
