Drama in Tyrol: Missing after avalanche accident discovered near Innsbruck!
On April 20, 2025, the body of a 42-year-old Austrian who had been missing since January 2025 was discovered in Tyrol at the summit of the Arzler Scharte. The body was found on April 19, 2025 around 11:50 a.m. by a hiker who came across the man who had already died. The identity of the deceased was clarified in the course of the salvage and further investigation.
It is assumed that the man who was traveling with snowshoes was hit by an avalanche a long time ago. Winter athletes discovered the avalanche north of the Arzler Scharte, which ultimately led to the rescue of the late man. In this campaign, the members of the Innsbruck mountain rescue and the emergency helicopter "Christophorus 1" and "Libelle" were deployed.
Details of the incident
The Arzler Scharte is a popular transition for ski tourers and snowshoe hikers. But as the region shows impressively, this popularity goes hand in hand with considerable ALPINE dangers. Especially avalanches are a permanent risk that has repeatedly led to tragedies in the past. Earlier avalanches were visible to the city of Innsbruck, which underlines the danger situation in the region.
Alpine accident research is supported by data from the Austrian Board of Trustees for Alpine Security (ÖKAS) and the alpine police, which records over 8,000 alpine accidents in a common database annually. This database is used for accident research and prevention work in mountain sports. The observation period for the statistics extends from November 1 to October 31 of the following year, whereby all alpine accidents are recorded in which the alpine police are involved.
The challenges in the Alps
The accident data is recorded according to certain criteria, and only if suspected of external negligence or fatal accidents is evaluated in structured reports. In the database, accidents are divided into categories, which rang from dead to injured and uninjured. A third of those affected can often be recovered unharmed, which is often due to blocks in the area.
The tragedy around the disappeared 42-year-old is not only an isolated case, but also reflects the general situation in the alpine space, where security and prevention are of the utmost importance. The reports on alpine accidents make it clear that preventive measures are essential to minimize the risk of alpinists and prevent future tragedies.
