On September 15, 2023, the municipality of Rust in Tullnerfeld experienced a devastating flood disaster, which flooded large parts of the region and resulted in the evacuation of around 180 houses. Mayor Bernhard Heinl (ÖVP) describes the day as "a date that has burned down" in the memory of the residents. Several dams of the Perschling broke to the climax of the flood, so that the water flocked into the valley unexpectedly. The dramatic hours were characterized by the concern for human life - "human rescue was the primary goal," said Heinl, who was affected by the consequences.

The total damage was estimated at 23.4 million euros, and 1.7 million euros are also required for the renovation of the sewer infrastructure, as

Despite the past few months, in which there is hardly anything of the catastrophe on the outside, the flood remains an omnipresent topic. "Hardly a conversation that does not have about it," explains Heinl, referring to the increased cohesion in the community. People have come together to support each other and to master the challenges. However, there is a certain confidence for the upcoming Christmas holidays. While the festival will be difficult for many, the mayor shows optimism: "The most important view is confidence." In order to process the event, the market town of Michelhausen plans a publication that is to be presented on the first anniversary of the flood in order to preserve the memories of this serious event and to maintain for future generations, such as 5min reported.
