The film rust celebrated his emotional world premiere at the Camerimage Film Festival in Poland on Wednesday, just three years after the tragic death of the Ukrainian-American camera hugehna Huthina Hutchins. The director Joel Souza told Screen that Hutchins had wanted that the Western celebrates its premiere at this festival, which is devoted to camera art. Hutchins died on October 21, 2021 after she was hit by a props that was held by Star Alec Baldwin at a rehearsal in Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico.

Souza, who was also injured by the incident and continued production in Montana in 2023, explained: "I am very proud that we are here. Halyna often spoke of this festival while filming and said it was perfect for a western." The film tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who, after the death of his parents in the 1880s in Wyoming, is fighting for his survival and, after the fatal accident, is sentenced to death with a local ranch. He is supported by his alienated grandfather, embodied by Baldwin.

termination of Hutchins ’vision

Souza emphasized that it was very important to him to preserve Hutchins ’original vision and complete her last work. "We had to tell stories and at the same time preserve every single frame that Halyna had recorded," he added. Bianca CLINE, who acted as a camera woman during the second filming, also donated her salary for charitable purposes. "We tried to reproduce the set, the light and everything as Halyna and I developed together," said Souza.

During his return to production, Souza made it clear that the emotional stress was great for him. "There are people who want to work in a storm and others who prefer it in a quiet environment. I realized that everyone is here for Halyna, whether they knew them or not. Everyone wanted to end it for them." During the premiere of Rust Souza, together with CLINE and RACHEL MASON, a friend of Hutchins, stood on the stage of the festival.

Some members of the camera community expressed concerns that the performance of the film could be considered inappropriate because it resulted from the death of a colleague. Matt Delpiano and other producers support the perspective of the festival that the presentation of rust is an appropriate way of honoring Hutchins' souvenir and preserving their legacy.

The film's final credits begin with the words "for Halyna", followed by a question that Hutchins is attributed: "What can we do to do it better?"

commitment to gender equality

Souza has also undertaken to fight for the necessary strengthening of the gender equality behind the camera. When choosing a camera woman for rust , he put together a long list, on which almost all of them, except for two, were women. "An agent said that women could not turn a Western, which made me really angry. My goal was to only hire women," he said.

"Some may say that I just try to look good. I don't care. I will work until the inequality for women changes. This is something that is very important to me." rust is produced by Matt Delpiano, Nathan Klingher, Anjul Nigam, Ryan Smith and Ryan Winterstern, with Grant Hill as a producer. The Camerimage Festival will continue to take place in Toruń, Poland until November.
