Citizens help shape: Results on the design of the main square in Oberpullendorf
A meeting of the BLOP! association recently took place in the heart of Oberpullendorf. (Movement for a livable Oberpullendorf), where the results of a survey on the redesign of the main square were presented. This survey, which was carried out between August 2023 and October 2024, enjoyed lively participation: almost 200 citizens gave their opinion. The discussion was not only about the design of the square, but also about ways in which citizens can be better involved in decisions.
The survey clearly showed what participants' wishes were for the main square. At the top of the list are greenery, shading and seating options. These results were presented by Diemtar Csitkovics, one of the active members of BLOP!. "68 percent of those surveyed would like to be actively involved in the decisions to redesign the main square. Only 6 percent believe that the local council alone should make such decisions. This shows how great the need for a say is," explained Csitkovics. Citizens therefore feel strongly connected to the design of their environment.
Important issues for citizens
In addition to the wishes already mentioned, the respondents pointed out that the provision of a public toilet was also of great importance. This aspect is often overlooked, but plays an important role in the quality of stay in public spaces. The results illustrate the strong desire for a lively and inviting space design.
On November 13th the association BLOP! Present further results of the survey at a business get-together. Concrete suggestions and ideas for creating meeting areas and revitalizing the town center should be discussed here. Such events are important for the association's members because they not only capture the needs of citizens, but also initiate a dialogue with local entrepreneurs and the city administration.
The BLOP! initiative shows how important citizen participation is for the development of a lively city center. By focusing on the opinions and wishes of the population, an environment can be created that meets modern needs while increasing the quality of life in Oberpullendorf.
