Reference basins protect municipalities: flood risk on the Leitha
In the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung, the recent storms have clearly demonstrated how important effective flood protection measures are. Despite intensive precipitation and rising levels, more severe damage could be largely prevented thanks to existing retention basins. These pools are installed on the Leitha in many communities and have proven to be valuable to control the amount of water.
"The situation was tense, but our flood protection took care of it," said a spokesman for the State Security Center (LSZ). On September 25th, the LSZ warned the residents along the Leitha of possible floods. In the shortest possible time, the fire brigades in Northern Burgenland recorded over 640 missions to pump out the basement and fix other acute dangers.
situation on site
In the municipality of Wimpassing, which is located directly on the Leitha, the happy hand of the investments in flood protection showed. Mayor Ernst Edelmann reported that the clarification basin of the sewage treatment plant had to be pumped out with the support of the fire brigade, since the natural drainage was blocked by the high water level. "Sandbags were placed in the area of the leisure hamper to ensure security," continued Edelmann. He denied the question of retrofitting needs unless the flood events would continue to increase.
In Hornstein, on the other hand, the new buildings of the retention basins were a stroke of luck. Mayor Christoph Wolf found that the new flood protection measures were able to intercept a large part of the rainy amounts. "Nevertheless, there were some basement overflowing and storm damage that our fire brigade had to cope with. The damage in public buildings is currently being examined," explained Wolf. The investments in the Hornstein flood protection amount to around two million euros, with further projects.
The civil protection alarm was particularly pronounced in Neufeld. Mayor Michael Lampel reported that caution in the area of the bridges led to the biggest problems. In particular, the underpass on the railway had to be cleared with heavy equipment, which led to short -term closures in rail transport. "Here a bridge without a middle ranks would be the optimal solution," said Lampel. In this community, too, flood protection has paid off from recent years.
financial investments
Minister Norbert Tettschnig announced an additional 80 million euros for flood protection in Burgenland after the flood events. However, this is only considered the first step in a long -term strategy. Burgenland has invested around 200 million euros in flood protection measures since 2010. It is emphasized that additional measures and projects are necessary in order to be prepared even better in the future.
In the coming weeks and months, the effects of these recent weather events and the need for further investments will be analyzed in detail. The municipalities hope to be more effective protective measures to ensure the safety of residents and to counteract nature.
