Coca-Cola calls 28 million bottles-recycling in Müllendorf started

Because of a technical error in production, Coca-Cola had to carry out a huge recall campaign at the end of October and take around 28 million PET bottles off the market. During a review, the company discovered that small pieces of metal could be in the bottles. The content of these bottles is now being processed into biogas, while the bottles themselves get a new chance in the recycling process.

The recycling company Pet to Pet in Müllendorf, a place in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district, has already received the first truck loads of the bottles concerned. Managing Director Christian Strasser reports: "We assume that all 28 million bottles come to us in empty form and pressed in bales." These bottles are then converted into a material from which new bottles can be produced again. This is a positive step for the environment because recycling saves valuable resources.

impressive recall action

This measure is one of the largest recall actions that Austria has ever experienced. This is a challenge for the experienced company Pet to PET, but Strasser is confident: "We process over 30,000 tons a year, and that is about 100 tons a day. I think we have no problem, even if there are 28 million bottles."

The a total of approximately 500 tons of bottles are fully integrated into the production process. Despite the recall campaign, this has no negative impact on the recycling process. The company plans to process the bottles quickly and convert into new products, which could reduce the environmental impact on plastic waste. The responsible people emphasize that recycling is well prepared for such incidents and can maintain the raw material cycle.

A detailed view of this recall and its consequences can be found in current reports. Experts and the affected company work hand in hand to cope with the situation as best as possible, and to ensure that such problems are avoided in the future. Read more on this topic on burgenland.orf.at .
