An unscrupulous fraudster from Turkey is causing a stir in Austria: The 31-year-old has recently been behind bars after her fraud led to losses amounting to millions. As part of a series of scams that particularly target older people, the woman is suspected of stealing over 500,000 euros. Victims of these schemes were deprived of their money using tricks such as the so-called “police trick” and bail fraud. Police reports show that over a million euros in damage was caused in the first two months of this year alone, making the situation particularly worrying for authorities, particularly in Vienna, where such calls are particularly common. A dramatic case concerns an 81-year-old woman who was tricked by a supposed police officer into withdrawing 17,000 euros from her bank and handing it over to a fraudster.
