Indictment against Wöginger: Coalition stands firmly together despite scandal!

Today the political landscape in Austria is shaken by the indictment against the ÖVP club chairman August Wöginger. This indictment, which was filed by the [justiz.gv.at](https://www.justiz.gv.at/wksta/wirtschafts-und-korruptionsstanwalt/medienstelle/pressemitigungen/pressemitigungen-2025/verfahrens complex-casag-anklage-wegen-amtstreibs-bei-postenbestellung.1038.de.html) at the Linz Regional Court, is in connection with the accusation of abuse of office. Wöginger is accused of having intervened with the head of the Finance Ministry's cabinet to favor a party-friendly mayor.

Details of the indictment show that Wöginger appears to be the intended perpetrator. Two civil servants are also charged because they were involved in the illegal appointment of posts due to their bias. One candidate was given preference over the other applicants despite being less qualified, which constitutes a violation of equal treatment. According to the Association of the Federal Equal Treatment Commission, discrimination based on the ideology that is discussed in this case has already been identified.

Coalition reactions

Reactions within the coalition are mixed. Despite the serious allegations, SPÖ State Secretary Michaela Schmidt explains that cooperation in the coalition will not be affected by the accusation. Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr from NEOS is also of the opinion that this situation will not disrupt government work.

The ÖVP shows solidarity with Wöginger. Chancellery Minister Claudia Plakolm has emphasized that the party supports him 100 percent. However, she did not comment on the possible outcome of the proceedings because it was not possible to anticipate the courts. This underlines the trust in the independent judiciary, which Schmidt and State Secretary Josef Schellhorn (NEOS) also emphasize.

Legal situation and fight against corruption

The case also raises general questions about criminal corruption law and the rules surrounding abuse of office. According to information from oesterreich.gv.at, criminal corruption law is intended to prevent office holders from abusing their positions for personal gain. For example, accepting undue advantages to influence decisions is a criminal offense, while “due advantages” are permitted under certain circumstances.

In the context of these legal provisions, it is clear that the allegations against Wöginger must be taken seriously and the impact on the political landscape could potentially be far-reaching. The ongoing proceedings could not only have personal consequences for the club chairman, but also for the entire coalition, which is supposed to contribute to the stability of the government.

Wöginger himself has already protested his innocence and announced that he would cooperate fully with the investigation. The coming weeks will be crucial to closely monitor the development of this process and to continue to monitor the reactions of the responsible political actors.
