Amsterdam saves cats: new stairs against drowning!

The city council of Amsterdam has decided to build special stairs, also known as "Cattal Trapjes", on the quay walls of the canals. This step is part of an initiative to keep cats that accidentally fall into the water from drowning. City Councilor Judith Krom introduced the proposal by the party for the animals and is now to be implemented after a total of 19 cats in Amsterdam's waters have drowned in the past six months.

cats have the ability to swim for a short time, but need safe access to the bank in order not to be in danger. Before the construction of the stairs, in cooperation with the Amsterdam animal rescue ambulance is checked at which points the cats are particularly at risk. The project aims to increase the safety of the animals in a city surrounded by water like Amsterdam.

The situation for cats in Amsterdam

The construction of these rescue stairs is an important step in the city's animal welfare policy. In an urban environment in which waterways are omnipresent, cats can quickly get into dangerous situations. Judith Krom emphasized that it was of the utmost importance to offer the animals a way to get out of the water safely.

In order to raise awareness of animal welfare, this step could also help to sensitize the public to the topic, especially in a city that already houses numerous institutions for animal welfare and adoption. Such is de Poezenboot, a unique floating cat home in Amsterdam, which was founded in 1966 and has served many cats as a refuge since then.

de poezenboot as an example of animal welfare

de Poezenboot is not only a shelter, but also a place of encounter for cat lovers. Visitors can visit the cats, stroke them and interact with the social animals. Access to the boat is free and donations in the form of money, treats or toys are welcome. The visit can take place on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Visiting information is available on the De Poezenboot website.

In combination with the planned rescue stairs, this shows Amsterdam's commitment to improve animal welfare and to secure the habitat for stray and stranded cats. The measures that the city takes illustrates that the protection of animals is also of great importance in urban rooms.

This innovative project will not only promote the well -being of cats in Amsterdam, but also strengthen awareness of their protection. It remains to be seen which further initiatives are taken to improve animals in the city.
