The risk of forest fires in Vienna is increasing: forestry experts warn urgently!

Vienna is on alert: the risk of forest fires has increased dramatically in recent weeks due to the extremely dry weather. As Forest Director Andreas Januskovecz warned Radio Vienna, it is crucial to avoid open fires, as even smoking in the forests can lead to devastating fires. He urged the public to report any smoke immediately as time is a critical factor in the fight against forest fires. These serious warnings come against the backdrop of a February 2025 that brought 66 percent less precipitation than usual across Austria, Geosphere Austria reported.

Extreme weather is becoming more frequent

In February there was almost no snow at all in Vienna and other parts of Austria. No new snow fell in the capital, while around 14 centimeters was expected on average in February in recent years. The statistics speak volumes: February was drier only in 1998, 2003 and 2011. In many regions, including Kufstein, Kremsmünster and Reichenau/Rax, no fresh snow fell either. These extreme conditions could have serious consequences for vegetation and nature.

According to climatologist Alexander Orlik, such a dry February is a rare event that statistically occurs about every five to seven years. In addition, temperatures in the lowlands rose 1.0 degrees above the average level of recent decades, making February 2025 the 45th warmest since measurements began. At the same time, Austria experienced an increased number of hours of sunshine, which accelerated the development of vegetation. Early bloomers such as snowdrops bloomed three days earlier than the long-term average, which indicates the change in seasons caused by the lack of rain and milder temperatures.

The situation remains tense: without early rainfall, the risk of forest fires threatens to further escalate, and nature is facing an enormous challenge, as the current data on drought and lack of snow make clear.
