Ukraine's President Zelensky emphasizes decisive support for Trump after a heated argument in the White House. He calls for security guarantees and reaffirms the strategic partnership with the USA.
Zelensky: Trump's support is crucial after criticism
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasizes that US support for Ukraine is “essential”. This follows a conflict with Donald Trump in the White House, after which Zelensky had to leave the country early.
Breakdown of an important meeting
A meeting originally intended to discuss a natural resources deal ended in fiasco. Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized the Ukrainian leader in front of reporters in the Oval Office. When Zelensky tried to respond, an angry Trump accused him of “playing with World War III.”
Meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer
After his arrival in London, where he was supposed to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Zelensky was conciliatory. He said on social media: "It is critical for us to have the support of President Trump. He wants to end the war, but no one wants peace more than us."
Gratitude for US support
Zelensky thanked the US for its support in the three years since Russia invaded his country. During Friday's heated exchange, Vance questioned whether Zelensky had shown sufficient gratitude for U.S. aid.
Zelensky emphasized in his social media posts: "We are very grateful to the United States for their support. I thank President Trump, Congress for their bipartisan support and the American people. Ukrainians have always appreciated this support, especially during these three years of all-out invasion."
Maintain strategic partnership
The Ukrainian president made it clear that despite the conflict on Friday, Ukraine and the USA remain “strategic partners”. “We need to be honest and direct with each other to truly understand our shared goals,” he added.
Urgent need for security
Zelensky said that Ukraine was ready Mineral Agreements, which he wanted to negotiate in the US, but noted that “it is not enough”. He emphasized the lack of the required security guarantees.
"We need more than just that. A ceasefire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine. We have been fighting for three years, and the Ukrainian people must know that America is on our side," Zelensky said.
Meeting European leaders
Zelensky will meet with Starmer at the British prime minister's official residence later on Saturday, before taking part in a wider meeting with a number of European leaders at a summit on Sunday.
