“A year ago, I would never have heard of soldiers publicly complaining about their leaders,” said Samya Kullab, correspondent for the Associated Press news agency in Ukraine. “Now, however, not only are they speaking out to me, but they are also posting openly on their social media – with names, ranks and units – telling everyone what is not working.” These courageous voices show an alarming turnaround in troop morale.
Everyday life in the shadow of war
But it's not just the soldiers who suffer. Civilians bear the heaviest burdens of this incessant conflict. “The war is all-encompassing, you can’t escape the fact that it’s happening,” explains Kullab. People in cities and villages are constantly confronted with the consequences. A walk through the streets becomes a constant reminder of the horrors of war.
"You stroll past little stalls, see pretty handmade things, and then read a sign: 'Please buy these handmade things. I'm trying to raise money for my husband's unit,'" she continues. These small gestures of survival and support can be found everywhere as people try to help each other.

The traces of the war cannot be overlooked. “The number of amputees I see on the streets every day is shocking,” adds Kullab. This reality is a constant companion in the lives of Ukrainians who, despite all odds, try to cope with their everyday lives. The war not only scarred the country, but also the souls of the people.
