Sudan in chaos: civil war and humanitarian catastrophe threaten!

In Sudan, a devastating civil war has been bubbling in Sudan since April 2023, which has previously demanded tens of thousands of life. The parties to the conflict, the Sudanese army (SAF) under General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary rapid support forces (RSF) under Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, also known as "Hementi", are in the middle of a bitter argument about power in the country. According to Kleine Zeitung are already urgently dependent on humanitarian help. Shocking 17.7 million people face acute hunger, while five regions have already called for a famine.

The situation escalated on April 15, 2023 in the capital of Khartum when serious fights broke out. The fighters of both sides violate humanitarian law and human rights, and aid organizations face enormous challenges: they complain about the lack of access to affected areas through bureaucratic hurdles and continuing violence. Like bpb.de , around 6.5 million people are now looking for protection within the country, and almost two million people also left the country, especially towards Egypt, Chad and South Sudan. However, the international community is not very committed to criticizing a "global amnesia" in relation to the humanitarian crisis.

a forgotten humanitarian disaster

The RSF was founded in 2013 to stabilize the regime of the then dictator Omar al-Bashir. After the fall of Bashir 2019, however, power between the two generals passed into a violent power struggle. This conflict has plunged the country into a humanitarian catastrophe that is hardly noticed in international focus, especially in the shadow of other crises such as in Gaza or Ukraine. Human Rights Watch and other organizations blame Hemeti and the RSF for numerous human rights violations and warn of other atrocities.

The situation in Sudan remains tense and associated with this is the constant threat to millions of people. While the international media report little about the conflict, the personal fates of the victims are an urgent warning to the world to pay more attention to this human tragedy.
