Mohammed al-Dschulani: A new guide or an old terrorist?
Syrien, Land - Mohammed al-Dschulani, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, has established himself as the new strong man in Syria. Once as a radical Islamist and leader of the Al-Nusra front, which was considered a branch of Al Qaeda, he is now trying to present himself as a moderate leader of the now renamed Hay’at Tahrir al-sham (HTS) group. This works from the Austrian Nachrichten and the Aargauer Zeitung . The 42-year-old Dschulani won control over strategically important areas in Syria in a short time and distanced himself from his extremist roots.
In 2003, Dschulani joined militant groups in Iraq, where he fought against US troops. Since the outbreak of the Syria War in 2011, however, he has increasingly positioned himself as a leader of a rebel group who wants to differentiate itself from the extremist ideologies. Today he pretends to strive for a peaceful takeover, while international secret services continue to classify him as terrorists and have exposed a bounty of $ 10 million on him. Dschulani himself describes his intentions in social media as the creation of an "institutional government", which also guarantees minority rights, which has given him a certain reputation in the Syrian population.
a dubious change of image
The geostrategic situation in Syria remains tense. The question of whether the United States and the International Community of Dschulani can ultimately trust is difficult by its complex connections to the past and the ongoing conflicts in the region. The big challenge for world politics will be whether Dschulani is actually willing to bring about real change, or whether it is only a refined deception.
