On the night of Thursday, February 12, 2025, the border area between Bosnia and Montenegro was shaken by a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4. According to the US Earthquake Observatory, the epicenter of the quake was about 30 kilometers from the town of Nikšić and 25 kilometers from Bileća. The tremors were felt throughout the Western Balkan region as far as the Bosnian capital Sarajevo. Despite the intensity of the quake, no damage or injuries have been reported so far, according to local media, citing seismologist Srdjan Cekovic from the Montenegrin Institute of Geophysics. The quake occurred at 4:06 a.m. at a depth of 7.6 kilometers in an uninhabited area. The Courier reports that about 30 aftershocks were recorded after the mainshock, including five with magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.5.
Previously, on Tuesday evening, Croatia was also shaken by a magnitude 5 earthquake. The epicenter was 16 kilometers from Posedarje and was clearly felt by numerous citizens from different parts of Croatia, as well as Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. A resident of Šibenik described how the quake “thundered terribly” and caused many to flee outside in panic. The mayor of Starigrad, Marin Cavic, also confirmed that the quake was strongly felt, but so far there are no reports of property damage or injuries.
