On the night of Thursday, February 12, 2025, the border area between Bosnia and Montenegro was shaken by a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4. According to the US earthquake station, the Epicentrum of the Stift was around 30 kilometers from the city of Nikšić and 25 kilometers from Bileća. The shocks were felt in the entire western Balkans region up to the Bosnian capital Sarajevo. Despite the intensity of the quake, no damage or injuries have so far been reported, as the local media, citing seismologists Srdjan Cekovic from the Montenegrin Institute of Geophysics. The quake occurred at 4:06 a.m. at a depth of 7.6 kilometers in an uninhabited area. The courier reports that around 30 nuisance were registered after the main quake, including five with strengths between 3.0 and 3.5.
Previously, on Tuesday evening, Croatia was also shaken by an earthquake of strength 5. The epicenter was 16 kilometers from Posedarje and was clearly perceived by numerous citizens from various parts of Croatia as well as from Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. A resident of Šibenik described that the quake "thundered" terribly and made many to panic outside. The mayor of Starigrad, Marin Cavic, also confirmed that the quake was very noticeable, but so far there are no reports on damage to property or injured. He and the head of disaster protection, Mario Zubcic, are in contact to check the situation on site, while smaller wickers continue to shake the region.
