Mass panic in Nigeria: tragic accident during food distribution!
Numerous people have died in tragic mass panics in Nigeria. In the capital Abuja, at least 31 people, including four children, lost their lives as free food was distributed at a charity event outside a Catholic church on Saturday. The crush ensued into deadly chaos, which police said began outside the community center in Anambra where rice and other food items were being distributed to needy people. Nigeria's President Tinubu has canceled his official engagements and expressed his sadness over the incident by praying for the victims and their families.
Collapse of order
In addition to the tragedies in Abuja, there were reports of another stampede in Port Harcourt, where a similar incident also claimed 31 lives. Participants had gathered to receive free food donations from Kings Assembly Church. An injured woman told police that a crowd shortly before the event began could have triggered the deadly chaos. Reports of children among the victims have been investigated but have not been confirmed at this time. Injured people were taken to a nearby military hospital.
The recurrence of such tragedies in Nigeria raises questions about security arrangements at large gatherings. In recent months there have been repeated fatal incidents at food distribution events, most recently in Maiduguri, where seven people died. The President was deeply affected and expressed his condolences. The government and authorities have now ordered investigations to prevent such incidents in the future Small newspaper reported. The incidents also highlight the precarious situation in a country where more than 80 million people live below the poverty line RND stated.
