Food prices are exploding: record increases of up to 162%!
Food prices are reaching alarming levels! Since the wave of inflation began in September 2021, prices for cheap food have risen by an impressive 53 percent on average. A shopping basket that once cost 51 euros now costs almost 78 euros. This is shown by the current AK price monitor, which evaluated the price development of 40 of the cheapest foods and cleaning products. Products such as penne pasta rose in price by an incredible 97 percent and flour and coffee by 88 percent each. Even for basic foods such as eggs and milk, consumers have to dig deep into their pockets, as the Chamber of Labor reports.
The most dramatic price increases were recorded for orange juice, which increased in price by an incredible 162 percent! Even the prices for tea butter rose by 85 percent and pureed tomatoes by 87 percent. The frightening conclusion: A majority of the substances examined are becoming more expensive, only occasionally there are a few exceptions - such as liquid laundry detergent and cucumbers, which have become slightly cheaper. In a year-on-year comparison, from December 2023 to December 2024, prices again rose by an average of 6 percent, with supermarkets offering a surcharge of 10.2 percent compared to discounters.
Prices at record levels
The situation for consumers is tense: there have never been such high price increases since the 2008 survey! The Chamber of Labor points out that the exorbitant cost of food makes cooking and shopping much more difficult for many people. Even everyday products become a financial nightmare, which can put a huge strain on your budget. This development is not only a slap in the face to buyers, but also reveals the clearly noticeable effects of the ongoing wave of inflation, which still cannot be brought under control wien.arbeiterkammer.at determines.
Given these dramatic developments, it remains to be seen whether the price landscape will stabilize in the near future or whether consumers will continue to face high financial burdens. Looking at this price increase - not just as a temporary phenomenon - raises worrying assumptions about the future cost of living in Austria, as has already been the case vienna.at reported.
