Carnival fever in Ebensee: Colorful tradition conquers Lake Traunsee!
Ebenthal was transformed into a dazzling carnival stronghold on February 1st when the SPÖ attracted numerous guests under the motto “A fun evening in red”. Prominent visitors such as SPÖ district party leader Ervin Hukarevic and honorary citizen Franz Felsberger celebrated exuberantly. The band “Die Wörtherseer” ensured an exciting atmosphere until the early hours of the morning. A highlight of the evening was the mask award, in which 23 groups and individuals took part and were rewarded with excellent prizes for their creativity. This successful event follows on from the legendary Ebenthal masked balls of the 1980s to 2000s klick-kaernten.at reported. The SPÖ Ebenthal is already planning a continuation for next year in order to further establish this celebration.
At the same time, carnival culture is flourishing in Ebensee, where the colorful hustle and bustle is celebrated on “Scrap Monday” on February 12th. The parade, known as the Fetzenzug, moves through the streets of the city at 3 p.m., and participants dress in elaborately designed, colorful costumes that testify to the history of the carnival tradition in the region. This tradition, which dates back to 1604, was started by salt workers from Ausseerland and developed rapidly. Spectators can expect a colorful spectacle in which the creative “rags” robes and wooden masks are the main attraction. Carnival is of historical importance for the community, as the Shrove Tuesday revolt of 1733 shows how firmly anchored this tradition is in the culture of the region salzi.at.
