Robbery after a fraternity party: Perpetrator strikes and flees!
A 29-year-old man was the victim of an attack on the sidelines of a fraternity party in Leoben. The events happened when he was approached by an unknown person and invited to a nearby clubhouse. However, after knocking on the door, he was suddenly attacked in front of the building. The attacker punched him in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground and continue to be kicked. Finally, the perpetrator snatched his cell phone and a cap and fled back to the clubhouse.
After the attack, the victim immediately alerted the police, who were able to go to the restaurant with around 20 officers. Despite the intensive search, no suspect could initially be located. However, as part of the investigation, the stolen cap was discovered in the basement of the restaurant, while the cell phone remains missing. Further investigations were initiated by the Styria State Police Department in order to track down the perpetrator. Background to the crime situation
The incidents like this attack on the 29-year-old are part of a larger context that is documented by the police crime statistics (PKS). The PKS records the development of criminal activity in Austria and is based on the Austrian Criminal Code and additional criminal law. Since 2001, all reported cases have been registered electronically. These statistics play a crucial role in planning criminal police measures and their effectiveness in dealing with crime.
The PKS does not just represent reporting statistics, but is continually adapted to social changes and changes in criminal law. It follows a period of ten years and thus offers a long-term insight into the development of crime. The data supports both preventive and repressive crime control. Further information on this can be found on the [Federal Criminal Police Office] website (https://www.bundeskritikamt.at/501/start.aspx).
Relevance of crime statistics
Police crime statistics are not comprehensive as they only record crimes that have been reported to the police and forwarded to the court. The dark area of crime and the results of the legal proceedings are not taken into account. Factors influencing the PKS numbers include the reporting behavior of the population and the intensity of police controls. Annual security reports prepared and published by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry of Justice provide detailed insights into criminal policy developments.
In view of the attack in Leoben and the current crime figures, it is to be hoped that the investigation will quickly lead to a success and that similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
