Arrested: Refugee robs tobacconist and fails at employee!
A 25-year-old was arrested in Graz-Puntigam on Monday afternoon after he tried to rob a tobacconist. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. when the man entered the store with his face covered and his hood pulled up. He threatened the employee with a broken glass bottle and demanded cash. However, she refused to hand over the money, whereupon the perpetrator fled on foot without any loot. Immediate searches by the police led to the arrest of the suspect in the Puntigam district of Graz. When questioned, the man fully confessed to his crime.
It is noteworthy that the 25-year-old has been wanted as an escapee from the Graz-Jakomini prison since the end of September. He was in custody there and left without permission. On Monday, the suspect made a full confession during his interrogation and was then transferred back to the prison. Details about the original reason for his arrest or the man's whereabouts in the last two months are not yet known.
Details about the raid
The attack on the tobacconist was quickly picked up by the Seiersberg police station. The tobacconist employee was in a threatening situation during the incident when the man with the glass bottle demanded to give him money. However, the employee kept her nerve and refused, which ultimately led to the perpetrator having to flee without any loot. The police's quick response accompanied the search for the suspect, which was made easier by his conspicuous clothing.
Incidents like this attack are part of the police statistical surveys in Austria that report on criminal events. The Federal Criminal Police Office records such attacks in its police crime statistics (PKS) in order to analyze the development of crime in Austria. These statistics help to plan preventive measures as well as to strengthen the repression against crime.
The PKS has been recording all reported cases electronically since 2001 and is constantly optimized to reflect social changes and legal adjustments. Security reports prepared by the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry of Justice provide more detailed insights into criminal policy developments and their decline or increase.
In this case, thanks to the quick response and general averting of danger, the police were able to prevent a potentially more dangerous crime and take someone who was already wanted as a fugitive back into custody. However, such incidents raise questions about ongoing security in public areas and highlight the importance of vigilance and optimal policing.
