Termination of contract at LASK: Rene Renner starts a new chapter!

LASK and club icon Rene Renner are now going their separate ways! As the traditional club announced on Friday, the 31-year-old defender's contract was terminated early. This was originally supposed to run until June 2026. Renner, who has played for Linz since 2019, only made four appearances this season, the last on October 3rd in the UEFA Conference League against Djurgardens IF. The decision was made especially after the coaching change to Markus Schopp, who hardly included Renner in the squad.

In a total of 181 competitive games, the left-back not only wore the LASK jersey, but also played a key role in the club's success with seven goals and eleven assists. In his statement, coach and sports director Markus Schopp emphasized how important Renner was for the development of the club, both through his sporting achievements and his personality. “We would now like to enable him to take this step, to take a new path and continue his career at a new club,” explained Schopp, while Renner was grateful for the “wonderful time” he was able to spend at LASK and wished the club all the best for the future. This separation could rejuvenate the club as talented players are also available in the second team, as Renner said in an interview.

The termination of the contract represents a significant step for LASK, which can now focus on new talent. The premature end of the collaboration shows that adjustments in the team structure are necessary in order to achieve the sporting goals and is reinforced by Renner's canceled playing times under the new coach. It will also be a new challenge for the experienced defender to take the next steps in his career elsewhere, as his review of the past few years at LASK remains consistently positive.
