Tragic news from Austria: The Norwegian professional cyclist André Drege, just 25 years old, died in a serious fall on July 6, 2024 during the fourth stage of the Tour of Austria on the descent from the Großglockner. According to the organizers, the accident was reported during the royal stage, and although immediate resuscitation attempts were made by those present and the rescue team, Drege died from the serious injuries he sustained.

Cause of accident clarified

According to initial investigations, it was a technical defect that led to this tragic incident. Drege was traveling with other drivers on the Großglockner High Alpine Road when he drove over a hard object, which caused damage to his rear tire, according to the experts' report. These dramatic events overshadowed the entire stage, which was ultimately carried out in memory of the talented athlete. The cycling world mourns the loss of a rising star. Drege's team, Coop-Repsol, expressed its regret on social media: "Our entire team is shocked by this tragic accident and our thoughts are with André's family and loved ones." Several teams and cyclists have already expressed their condolences, including Lidl-Trek, Movistar and Intermarché–Wanty, all of whom react with heartbreak to this loss and pay tribute to Drege's remarkable career. Furthermore, the future of the final stage of the Tour of Austria remains uncertain as the race management has not yet made an official statement as to whether it will take place.
