Naples celebrates the brilliant restart of the opera house with Carmen!
The director of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Stéphane Lissner, has sued a controversial Italian government regulation that states that directors must leave office at the age of 70. This regulation came into force in May 2023 and would have meant that Lissner, who turned 70 on January 23, 2023, would have had to resign from office on June 10. However, after the acceptance of his appeal by a labor court in Naples, Lissner can continue to work until the end of his contract before retiring, as the Small newspaper reported.
Amid these developments, Teatro San Carlo made a strong comeback after the pandemic restrictions. Recently, the impressive space of Piazza del Plebiscito hosted two major performances of “Carmen,” featuring Latvian soprano Elina Garanca and other renowned artists. These events, which took place before an audience of 1,000 spectators, were met with great acclaim. The artistic director Lissner expressed optimism about the artistic future of the theater: “We have all worked hard so that the opera house can give its best again after the long months of standstill,” said Lissner sn.at quoted.
Inspiration for the next season
The new momentum at the Teatro San Carlo gives hope for an exciting season ahead. Lissner is planning eye-catching productions, including Verdi's “Trovatore” and Puccini's “La Boheme”. Anna Netrebko will also be appearing on stage again, which should further increase interest in the traditional house. Lissner, who has had a rich career at major opera houses, sees Naples as the final stage of his career and is determined to lead the opera house to new international splendor. "For years this theater was the largest and one of the most prestigious opera houses in Europe. It is also probably the most beautiful in the world," he said. With a diverse program and the aim of promoting new talent, Lissner plans to establish the Teatro San Carlo as an international cultural center.
