Manuel Feller: The end of an era in giant slalom!
As part of the World Cup giant slalom in Hafjell, Tyrolean ski star Manuel Feller officially ended his career in this discipline. During an interview with ORF on race day, the 32-year-old announced: "It was no different than in the 1st DG. It's already a fight from top to bottom. And of course the hammer comes at the finish." This announcement closes the giant slalom chapter for Feller, who is widely recognized for his sporting successes. He was able to be on the podium a total of seven times in his career, but an illness took a toll on him and ultimately led him to consider his retirement as inevitable, as the Kleine Zeitung also reported.
Decision based on health problems
The end of his career was already in the air because Feller recently had no opportunity to place among the top 30 athletes and was frustrated by the lack of FIS points in the giant slalom. "I tried everything, but in this situation it just didn't work. The decision was made in the sense that I'm no longer in the top 30 and don't have any FIS points in the RTL," he explained. Feller wished he could still compete at the Olympic Games, but this no longer seems realistic to him due to the current situation, as he said: “I certainly won't be messing around with start number 50,” he said in a candid moment, according to reporting by laola1.at.
Finally, the skier let it be known that if he achieved the required points in the slalom, he would like to do one last race in the giant slalom. However, this could have been the last appearance in this discipline. “I was able to celebrate a lot of great successes, but at some point it all just comes to an end,” said Feller in an emotional end to his giant slalom career.
