Jimmy Carter: The Last of His Kind - Mourning a Peacemaker

The death of Jimmy Carter, the former US president and human rights activist, sparked mourning around the world. The 100-year-old died on Sunday in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family, the Carter Foundation said. President Joe Biden made January 9 a national day of mourning, while flags across the US will fly at half-mast for 30 days. Carter was president from 1977 to 1981 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work, reported Krone.at.

There is an atmosphere of memories and respect in the town of Plains, where Carter began his political career as governor of Georgia and eventually became the 39th President of the United States. The stores that had just taken down their Christmas decorations were now decorated with red, white and blue. How IJPR reported, residents are preparing to honor the legendary neighbor who continued to promote peace, democracy and human rights after his term in office. Preparations for the funeral service are already in full swing; Plains Inn staff plan to provide housing for the Carter family during this time.

Carter, whose last years were marked by health problems, will also be remembered for his down-to-earth manner. Local residents remembered his connection to the community and his humility as they shared stories of their encounters with him. “He was one of us,” says a former city councilor. Many in Plains see Carter as a figure who remained a part of the community despite his presidency, reported IJPR.
