Fernando Alonso in mourning: Long-time physio Fabrizio Borra died

Fernando Alonso mourns the loss of his long-time companion Fabrizio Borra, who recently died after a year-long battle with cancer. Borra, who died on Sunday morning, May 11, 2025, in Forlì, Italy, was Alonso's physiotherapist for over two decades and accompanied him at Minardi since his Formula 1 debut in 2001.

In a moving Instagram post, Alonso expressed his sadness and gratitude for Borra and his influence on his life and career. Borra was not only a physiotherapist, but also a confidant who supported Alonso throughout his Formula 1 career, most recently during his time at Aston Martin.

A significant influence

Fabrizio Borra was known for his innovative approach to physical training and rehabilitation, which earned him an excellent reputation in both motorsports and entertainment. Alonso praised Borra as a key figure in his professional career. In addition, Italian singer-songwriter Jovanotti, a long-time friend and client of Borra, also gave a moving farewell and highlighted his leadership qualities and innovative methods.

Borra attracted particular attention during the conflict between Alonso and Lewis Hamilton in 2007, when he played a role in the controversy surrounding the news at the Hungaroring. Michael Schumacher is also one of the athletes who trusted Borra's expertise, especially after Schumacher broke his leg in 1999, when Borra helped him make a comeback.

Legacy and grief

Borra is survived by his wife Enia and his sons Luca and Daniele, who now run the Fisiology Center he founded in Forlì. Borra was reportedly working on a book about his experiences with athletes before being told of his diagnosis. His last public appearance was at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza last year, after a difficult operation.

Fabrizio Borra will be remembered as an outstanding physiotherapist and loyal companion to numerous athletes who benefited from his expertise and dedication. Alonso and many others will miss his commitment and support.
