Trump speaks to Putin by phone on Monday

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: "The topics of the conversation will be stopping the 'bloodbath' that kills an average of more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers per week, and trade."

Direct discussions between countries

This announcement comes after direct talks between representatives of Ukraine and Russia that took place in Turkey on Friday. It was the first time in three years that the two countries spoke at this level.

Expectations for the meeting

Trump has already indicated that he does not expect a significant breakthrough in peace talks until he speaks personally with Putin. "I don't think anything will happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I get together," Trump told reporters earlier this week.

Planned talks with Zelensky and NATO

After his conversation with Putin, Trump also plans to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and various members of NATO. “Hopefully it will be a productive day, there will be a ceasefire, and this very violent war that should never have happened will end,” Trump concluded.
