Serious accident in Marchtrenk: Two people from Linz hit by a concrete pillar!

On June 27, 2025, a serious industrial accident occurred on a construction site in Marchtrenk, Wels-Land district, Upper Austria. At 8:42 a.m. rescue workers were alerted after two workers were hit by a concrete column weighing several tons. The two men, a 27-year-old and a 51-year-old, both come from Linz and had to be taken to two different clinics because of their serious injuries.

The accident occurred during the delivery of concrete pillars, each weighing 8.6 tons. A crane driver from the Wels-Land district was responsible for unloading the columns from the truck. As the concrete column was being lowered, the iron chain became entangled, causing the deposited column to topple over and hit the two workers. The exact circumstances of the accident are now being investigated by the police in order to clarify the cause of the accident.

Rescue operations and injuries

After the accident, the fire brigade, rescue service and emergency doctors were immediately called to help. The Christophorus 10 emergency medical helicopter was also used to provide care to the seriously injured men as quickly as possible. The 27-year-old was taken to the Wels Clinic, while the 51-year-old was flown to the Linz University Hospital. Both men are in stable but critical condition.

According to Statistik Austria, data on such occupational accidents are regularly collected in order to improve safety in the workplace and develop measures to reduce risks.

Risk management in the workplace

It is essential to create healthy conditions in the workplace. EU Regulation No. 349/2011 regulates the collection of data on occupational accidents, including the performance of statistics on recognized insurance cases. The umbrella organization of social insurance providers updates the statistics on work accidents, commuting accidents and occupational diseases every year.
In light of recent events at the Marchtrenk construction site, the need for increased safety monitoring and worker training is again highlighted.
