New life on the Danube Canal: greenery and promenade for everyone!
New life on the Danube Canal: greenery and promenade for everyone!
The redesign of the Donau Canal Mitte in Vienna accepts more concrete forms after the comprehensive concept of MA 45 - specialist department of Viennese waters was presented on March 27, 2025. The aim of the redesign is to establish the Danube Canal as a multifunctional space that counteracts climate change and at the same time increases the quality of stay for citizens. Markus Figl, the district leader of the inner city, described the measures as an important project in order to create a low-threshold lounge and green space for the neighborhood. With the motto "Doka becomes wow" the Danube Canal is to be upgraded.
The planned measures will include a clear structure, additional greening and an improved infrastructure, whereby no additional catering businesses are planned. The construction work on the approximately 300 meter long section between Salztor and Marienbrücke has already started and are to be completed this year. The entire area includes an area of 4,600 square meters, of which around 1,200 square meters are to be converted into green spaces.
new green areas and residence options
As part of the redesign, new trees are planted, including three large plane trees and several elms. In total, nine new trees are added, which will increase the ecological diversity in the area. The creation of residence areas with seating and other facilities such as four fog steles and two drinking wells should make the room more attractive to linger. The separation of bike and foot traffic with a four-meter wide path also ensures more security and comfort.
Innovative elements, such as a new guiding system for better orientation along the promenades, are also introduced. New public toilet plants that receive a fresh graffiti design are also included in the plan, as are contactless, free sun protection dispensers that are already available. These elements should help increase the quality of stay along the Danube Canal and to design the space for all users.
The role of urban green
The redesign of the Danube Canal is part of a broader discussion about the importance of urban green in urban development. City green not only improves the city climate, but also increases the quality of stay and has a positive impact on the physical and mental health of the residents. This development is necessary because many cities are fighting with a lack of strategically planned and sustainable green areas. With the goal of making the city even more livable, the importance of urban greens is increasingly recognized. The project to attracting the Danube Canal could serve as an example of other cities to implement new forms of urban greens and thus improve quality of life, health and the general living environment.
The upcoming measures are only the beginning. The redesign of another 200 meter long area on the Aspern Bridge is already planned for 2026. There, wooden decks are intended directly on the Kaimauer, and the equipment is adapted to the new right promenade. This continuous development of the Danube Canal shows the long -term vision of the city to redefine this urban area and to meet the requirements of a modern city life.
Overall, the redesign of the Danube Canal will not only change the landscape, but also contribute to strengthening social interaction in the city. The city of Vienna, its citizens and visitors can look forward to the future developments on the Danube Canal.
