Early cancer detection for women: This is how Vienna becomes healthier!
In Vienna, the local NGO Social City Wien and the FEMSÜD health center have launched an innovative project that aims to raise awareness of female-specific cancers. Despite the alarming fact that only 40 percent of women between the ages of 45 and 74 have regular mammograms, women with immigrant backgrounds are particularly difficult to reach ORF Vienna reports. Language barriers and social challenges make access to important health information difficult. Training for health ambassadors aims to change this by providing information in their own language as well as in German. The goal is to increase participation in early detection programs and ultimately improve women's health.
Frauen-Werk-Stadt – An innovative residential project
Another notable project that was realized in Vienna is the Women's Work City, a groundbreaking housing project that was initiated between 1995 and 1997 by the City of Vienna, specifically by the Women's Office. This project created 357 apartments designed by women and specifically geared towards the everyday lives and needs of women. It was a novelty as it demonstrated gender-sensitive planning in practice for the first time and led to the recognition of women in architecture.
The Frauen-Werk-Stadt not only promoted the needs of women, but also integrated numerous amenities such as a kindergarten, a doctor's office and playgrounds - everything for comfortable and safe living. Even after its successful implementation, the project triggered a wave of gender-sensitive planning in Vienna and encouraged more women to get involved in urban planning. Thanks to these initiatives, Vienna continues to be a pioneer in the development of gender-equitable housing concepts.
