Police use tear gas and water cannons against protests in Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya – Massive protests erupted in Kenya on Wednesday, marking the one-year anniversary of anti-government demonstrations. Those protests, which left dozens dead last year, led to a violent clash between demonstrators and police, with tear gas and water cannons used to disperse crowds.
Government takes action against media
The Communications Authority of Kenya has ordered all television and radio stations in the country to stop live coverage of the youth-led protests. The agency falsely claimed that the reporting violated Kenyan law and threatened regulatory action for non-compliance. However, many broadcasters, including CNN partner Citizen TV, did not immediately suspend broadcasts.
Protests in several cities
In Nairobi, the capital, as well as in the coastal city of Mombasa and other cities, thousands took to the streets to commemorate last year's protests. In Nairobi, the streets leading to the parliament building and the presidential office were blocked with barricades ahead of the demonstrations.
Allegations of police violence
Last year, scores of people were killed by security forces outside parliament, sparking nationwide outrage. The protests in 2024 led to the removal of one controversial finance law, which provided for tax increases. Yet many youth in Kenya remain angry over several cases of alleged police violence, including the Killing of a teacher in police custody and using a firearm against an unarmed street vendor.
Clashes between police and demonstrators
CNN reported on police violence as live ammunition was used against peaceful demonstrators in Nairobi. Some of the demonstrators showed fired cartridges. In the capital, protesters were also pushed back with tear gas and water cannon trucks, reminiscent of the dramatic scenes of last year.
Reports of injuries and deaths
Citizen TV published a Video on X, showing injured people being taken to a hospital in Nairobi. In Mombasa, some protesters were arrested and forced into police vans, as was another video shows. One person was killed during protests in Machakos County, eastern Kenya, on Wednesday morning, according to Citizen TV. CNN has not been able to independently verify the deaths but has contacted police for comment.
