Rent explosion after privatization: AK Vienna uncovers scandalous practices!
The financial crisis in housing in Austria is coming to a head. After the privatization of cooperative apartments, tenants must expect drastic rent increases, even where the cheaper, non-profit rents should apply. This is reported by the Chamber of Labor (AK) and points out the uncertainty of rental contracts, which are often only limited in time. Walter Rosifka from AK and Ernst Gruber from wohnbund:consult will present the alarming results of their analysis of housing conditions, which also affect tenants of BUWOG residential buildings, at a press conference on March 18, 2025 at 10 a.m. in the AK media room in Vienna. The press conference will also be broadcast live on the AK website wien.arbeiterkammer.at reported.
Another pressing issue is the rent check for old buildings, which was launched by the AK. Many tenants in Vienna pay more than the prescribed standard rent because landlords often do not adhere to the law. Complicated tenancy law and unclear regulations mean that many excessive rent prices are charged. According to AK, around two thirds of private old rental apartments are affected. With the new service, which was presented in a press conference by AK President Renate Anderl and the department heads Ludwig Dvořák and Ilkim Erdost, tenants can now check their rent. The AK gives them the opportunity to get back rent that they have paid too much without having to bear their own risk arbeiterkammer.at informed.
