Dodik sentenced: one year in prison and six years banned from politics!
Milorad Dodik, President of Republika Srpska, has been sentenced to one year in prison following a ruling by a Bosnian court. In addition to the prison sentence, he was also banned from holding public or political office for six years. However, this decision is not yet final, as both the prosecution and Dodik's defense want to appeal. The final verdict is expected from the Appeals Chamber by the end of the year Berlin newspaper reported.
Dodik was found guilty of disregarding decisions made by the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt. This behavior is considered serious, especially given the already fragile political situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The court decided that Dodik could also avoid prison by paying around 18,000 euros (around 36,000 KM). This did not preclude the acquittal of Milos Lukic, the acting director of the Official Gazette, who was not guilty in this context Cosmo reported.
Dodik, a Kremlin ally, had warned ahead of the verdict that a negative verdict could have fatal consequences for Bosnia-Herzegovina. Many citizens are concerned about the political tensions in the region, which could be further inflamed by the verdict. The National Assembly of Republika Srpska had previously passed a law prohibiting the publication of the High Representative's decisions in the Official Gazette, which led to this legal dispute.
