Richard Lugner, Austria's best-known businessman and a defining figure in social life, died on August 12, 2024 at the age of 91. His death left a void in the local society and business world. A special tribute to Lugner is currently being prepared on the first anniversary of his death. How oe24.at reported that discussions are underway with the city administration to name a square, a street or a park after Lugner.

Richard Lugner was born on October 11, 1932 in Vienna. He grew up the son of a lawyer and began his career in construction. He became known, among other things, for the opening of Lugner City, which has been one of the largest shopping centers in Austria since it was founded in 1990. In addition, Lugner became famous for his unconventional performances, especially at the Vienna Opera Ball, where he regularly invited prominent guests. Loud Wikipedia Lugner was also active in politics and received 9.91% of the vote in his 1998 presidential candidacy.

Planned honors

The discussions to honor Richard Lugner take place at district level. Possible districts for the proposed honor are the 15th district, where Lugner City is located, the 19th district, his place of residence, and the 1st district. The aim is for the city of Vienna to support this worthy gesture. A possible honor could take place on August 12th, the anniversary of Lugner's death. A memorial hour in Lugner's honor has already taken place in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. The event began at 9 a.m. and was led by cathedral priest Toni Faber osterreich24.at reported. High-ranking politicians were present, including Norbert Hofer from the FPÖ and Susanne Raab from the ÖVP, who praised Lugner as a “Viennese institution”.

His funeral took place among the closest family and friends in the Kaasgraben church and at the Grinzing cemetery. During the funeral service, the coffin was surrounded by red roses and a symbolic opera ball top hat lay on top. At the end, Lugner's coffin was carried to its final resting place with musical accompaniment. Lugner's legacy as an entrepreneur, supporter of art and culture, and his commitment to charitable causes remains alive in the hearts of many Viennese.
