The police were able to arrest the perpetrator in Schmiedgasse after he drove over the Augarten Bridge into Schönaugasse and Jakominiplatz and specifically headed for a guest garden in Herrengasse.

In a large-scale operation, 80 rescue vehicles and four rescue helicopters were on site. The situation was explained at a press conference with State Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer, the Mayor of Graz Siegfried Nagl and other responsible persons. Schützenhöfer and Nagl expressed their sympathy for the relatives and emphasized the need to find out the perpetrator's motives, while psychological problems were mentioned as a possible motivation.
