Lutherhaus Wittenberg will remain closed until 2027 – renovation begins!
The historic Luther House in Wittenberg will remain closed until 2027! A major renovation to improve energy efficiency and improve accessibility has begun, as the board of the Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt, Thomas Müller, announced. The federal and state governments are making a total of 15.3 million euros available for this important project. The Luther House, where Martin Luther lived and worked for over 35 years, will reopen after extensive work with a new permanent exhibition, which is expected in spring 2027 Catholic news agency KNA reports.
The Luther House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was originally built as an Augustinian monastery and is not only an important historical monument, but also a central place in the history of the Reformation. It was here that Luther wrote his famous 95 Theses, where he developed the basic principles of Protestantism. The Luther House was also the home for Luther and his family, including his wife Katharina von Bora. It has an essential role in Germany's cultural heritage and is an important part of the identity of Protestantism, as in Wikipedia reports.
Construction work for the future
Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) emphasized the importance of the Luther House for the cultural identity of the region and explained that they wanted to preserve the unique heritage for future generations and sustainably improve access to it. The construction work is necessary to prepare the historic building for years to come while providing visitors with an accessible experience.
Once the renovation work is completed, the Luther House will not only function as a museum, but also as a lively place to meet and learn about the Reformation and Martin Luther himself, who had a decisive influence on the religion and society of his time.
