Carinthia's superintendent warns of growing xenophobia
Klagenfurt, 03.03.2025 - In the middle of an explosive debate about asylum policy, the Carinthian superintendent Manfred Sauer warns of an increasing "undifferentiated xenophobia", which has strengthened after the tragic attack in Villach. According to Sauer, many people feel reinforced in their negative attitude towards refugee protection seekers. In a critical comment in the "Kleine Zeitung", he emphasizes that the flat -rate suspicions by social media and regulars tables accept scary dynamics and tighten hatred and aggression. He sees the risk that false solutions, such as the closure of asylum homes and increased deportations, could be seen as appropriate answers to the problem of migration, but he is certain that this is not the right way to deal with the situation. Sauer, which has been a superintendent of the Evangelical Church of Carinthia-East Tyrol since 2002, is committed to a human rights compliant and liberal society.
Sauer also questions the measures to close asylum homes in Villach and Finkenstein, where, in his opinion, many families live peacefully and gratefully for a second chance. He emphasizes the positive examples of asylum seekers who successfully integrate into society. In particular, he is reminiscent of a Syrian meal deliverer in Villach, who has taken great risk to other life, which shows that many refugees want to contribute actively and positively to their new homeland. In view of the upcoming Lent period, Sauer appeals to maintain compassion and charity and to follow the mandate of Jesus "to recognize the next as a brother and sister". This message is particularly important in times when the social cohesion is put to the test, such as evang-kaernten.at Beton.
