Carinthia's superintendent warns of growing xenophobia

Klagenfurt, March 3, 2025 - In the midst of an explosive debate about asylum policy, Carinthian Superintendent Manfred Sauer warns of increasing "undifferentiated xenophobia", which has intensified after the tragic attack in Villach. According to Sauer, many people feel encouraged in their negative attitude towards refugees seeking protection. In a critical comment in the “Kleine Zeitung” he emphasizes that the general suspicions through social media and regulars' meetings are taking on a frightening dynamic and are exacerbating hatred and aggression. He sees the danger that false solutions, such as the closure of asylum centers and increased deportations, could be seen as appropriate answers to the problem of migration, but he is certain that this is not the right way to deal with the situation. Sauer, who has been superintendent of the Evangelical Church of Carinthia-East Tyrol since 2002, is committed to a human rights-compliant and liberal society.

Sauer also questions the measures to close asylum homes in Villach and Finkenstein, where, in his opinion, many families live peacefully and gratefully for a second chance. He highlights the positive examples of asylum seekers who successfully integrate into society. In particular, he remembers a Syrian food delivery person in Villach who took great risks for other lives, which shows that many refugees want to contribute actively and positively to their new home. In view of the upcoming Lent, Sauer appeals to cultivate compassion and charity and to follow Jesus' command to “recognize your neighbor as brother and sister”. This message is particularly important in times when social cohesion is being tested evang-kaernten.at emphasized.
