Peaceful protest in Northeim: 250 people stand up against the AfD!

On Thursday, an event organized by the “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party took place in the Bürgersaal Northeim, which was met with strong public interest. Around 250 people protested against the AfD event, organized by the “Grandmas Against the Right” initiative. The protest was largely peaceful and ended at 6:30 p.m. Some participants spontaneously registered a new meeting, which also went without incident and ended at 7 p.m. To ensure order during the protests, the police were deployed with around 80 officers. Chief Police Commissioner Sandra Schwerdtner praised the cooperation with the organizers and noted that there were no major problems during the protests. The “Grandmas Against the Right” initiative has been campaigning against right-wing extremism and for democracy for years.

A similar protest took place in Trier, where on the same day a demonstration by the Buntes Trier association took place under the motto “Never again is now – together against the right”. From 2 p.m. more and more people streamed onto Porta Nigra Square, and the demonstration began at 2:15 p.m. towards the Viehmarkt. The police and public order office reported a number of participants that was initially up to 2,500 and was later corrected to between 4,000 and 4,500. The demonstration was directed against fascism, racism and the AfD and stood up for democracy and freedom. The final rally took place at the Livestock Market and there were no incidents throughout the event. Members of “Grandmas Against the Right” also took part here, proving that the movement has had 40 members since it was founded on February 9th. At the final rally, topics such as the anniversary of the Ukraine war, equality and democracy were addressed and the importance of Western solidarity was emphasized.

Events dedicated to resistance against the right

The events in Northeim and Trier illustrate the ongoing commitment of citizens against right-wing extremist ideas and for an open society. Both the peaceful protests in Northeim and the larger demonstration in Trier show that many people are ready to take a stand against extremism and stand up for their beliefs. The participation of initiatives such as “Grandmas Against the Right” underlines the importance of collective action in the fight against discrimination and injustice.
